Twelve Mokeys title sequence analysis.

The title sequence

Tile sequences usually open with the production companies so that the audience knows who is behind the creation of the film. this is a sales method so that the first thing they see is the production companies, if they like the film then they should watch other productions from the same companies. twelve monkeys is no acception, as the first thing we see is 'Universal pictures and Atlas Classico presents' this is the distribution company (universal) and the main production company (Atlas Classico).  It is then followed by the main production company to rehiterate that Atlas Entertainment was the main creator of the film.

After the Production/Distribution companies are established it then gives the audience a short outline of the story behind the plot, so that the audince knows what the film will be about. the font is sci-fi ish and gives the audience an idea that the feature could be set in the futre, or in some different time period.

Then the main titles apper. this contains an illusion-type background which is shaped with monkeys to represent the monkeys in the title of the film. it also gives a wierd feel to the film and could represent how the film is written .

Then the main people involved in the film appear in a dazzling font, For example:
Terry Gilliam(director)
And then actors (in order of importance):
Bruce Willis
Madeline Stowe
Brad Pitt

They would have shown these names as they are popular actors and also because they are the main protagonist in the film.

This opening features many panning shots that follow the moving items (which is a lot) going on in this opening scene. no titles are used to give the feeling that the main protagonist and his dog are alone. the camera is also perceived to be part of the scene for example as the fast paced deer jump off of many different objects it looks as if they kick the camera sometimes, this gives a jolty effect to make it look as if the camera is really there. it starts off slow to show the desolation of a once great city and then slowly builds up pace, this could represent how the outbreak occurred, or also how the protagonist is beginning to struggle more as supplies are getting more obsolete.

The Walking Dead titles

The opening

The Walking Dead title sequence is effective as it shows you detsroyed towns and sets of where the program is shot. it shows us the distributers, the main actors that are involved in the show, producers/extreme, the developers, and the title of the series which it 'the walking dead' this is used good as it fits the style of what the show is about and makes the show look very proffesional.

The tiles flow well with the imagery as they move with it, and blend in with the colour scheme in the background.

Clasification categories for films

Films are put into different ages categories that reflects how explicit a film is or how mature the content is. these categories are put in place to ensure that no one under the classified age can see the film as it would be too explicit/unsightly for the ages.

In Britain the main organisation that does these classifications are the 'British Board of Film', the BBFc aims to ensure these things;

  • protect  the public, and especially children, from content which might raise harm risks
  • empower the public, especially parents, to make informed viewing choices
  • recognise and respect adult freedom of choice within the law
  • respond to and reflect changing social attitudes towards media content through proactive public consultation and research
  • provide a cost-effective, efficient classification service within our statutory remit
  • work in partnership with the industry to develop innovative service models to provide content advice which support emerging media delivery systems
  • provide an effective service to enforcement agencies

Age ratings

U-This rating mean anyone of any age van view the film. it is used for film genres such as children's animation, to films such as Disney productions

PG-this means 'parental guidance' and means children can watch the film as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

12A- ages above 12 can see this film but anyone below the age of twelve must be with an adult.

12- you must be twelve to see this film.

15- you must be fifteen to view this production, for things such as action movies with violence, most post apocalyptic films I have researched come up in this age rating.

18- no one under the age of eighteen can view. things like horrors and war films with high amount of swearing, sexual content and gore come into this category.

Post apocalyptic films

Book of Eli- 15

The Road- 15

Children of men-15

12 monkeys-15

World War Z-15

Walking Dead-15

As you can see, the majority of the post apocalyptic films are categorised in the 15 age group. this is mainly as they all include some sort of volence and in some cases gore.

Chidren of men analysis

The Opening

Shot list

1) titles appear before any shot is shown.

2) cuts straight into high angle shot of lots of people stood in a cafe.

3) shaky camera to imply someone is carrying the camera, same high angle shot.

4) cuts to low angle shot of a television screen what everyone is viewing.

5) cuts back to the high angle shot seen before.

6) camera starts to move behind what is thought to be the main chracter, and people move out of the way, as if the camera is also a person.

7) has a quick look at the television, low angle shot.

8) wide angle shot of the london city. (as stated by the titles)

9) medium long shot where the camera is following the character from a distance.

10) camera pans around the character to look back up the road he has just come from.

11) camera starts moving as if it were a person running to the scene of the explosion.

The unique thing about this opening, that makes it effective, is that is is made to feel like it is all one shot, and that the camera is also a person walking down the street. this make you as a viewer feel like youre in the scene with the actors.

Conventions ascosiated with post apocalyptic films.

there are many conventions that come with post apocalyptic movies. such as:

Desolation
this is a convention that is essential in these movies as they are set after and 'apocalypse' this usually means the world has been destroyed/taken over and has therefore lead to destruction/desolation.

As you can see in the scene from 'The book of Eli' the town has been destroyed and panic and desolation is everywhere. this is shown through destroyed buildings, litter on the street, dust and unhappy people.

Survival
this is probably  the main  convention for post apocalyptic movies, as there is usually something out there that is trying to take the characters life, such as; disease, other survivors, the weather, supplies, shelter.
for example in this scene from the film 'zombie land' the characters are at the grocery store looking for supplies to help them survive. they carry weapons as a precaution as there could be threats inside the store.

Blood/Gore
Another convention that arises from films of this genre is the use of gore. this is either caused by the zombies as that's what they look like, or it is caused by injuries as after an apocalypse it would probably be a struggle to live in times such as these.

Death

death is one of the main conventions as you cant have an apocalypse without having death, and since this is POST apocalypse, some death will be in these films.

Research into post apocalyptic costumes

Post apocalyptic clothing

From my experience in watching post apocalpytic movies i have noticed that mostly the costumes are worn and dirty. this obviously due to the fact that the world has in essence ended and clothes are therefore a hard item to find/keep in good condition, as cleaning them is not the main thing a survivor would concentrate on.

The Road

As you can see from this image, the costumes used in the filme 'the road' gives you a sense that the characters are tryin g thier hardest to survive, and this is their main aim.

Coats+Gloves
the thick padded coats and gloves show the audience that they try to keep as warm as possible, which ties into survibal and is one of the main conventions that these genres are associated with.

Backpacks
these are probabbly the most essential peice of clothing to use and make the film believable as, the characters would be in search for miscelanious objects such as food, ammunition, drink and so on.

Hair
on the road the main character has alot of hair. This is to create the sense that the characters have been stripped of their natural ability to clean and groom themselves, and so have started to grow more hair. also the extra hair could also aid in the character keeping warm.
as you can see in this shot, both characters hir a reasonably long and dirty.
Dirt
on the road the character come across as being dirty. this is because thay arent ever living in a fixed location and due to the apocalypse they aren't able to find clean enough water to keep clean.

Weapons
characters from this genere will generally have weaopons as after the apocalypse there is a threat of either a creature, or any hostile survivors.

I Am legend

in these films of the same genre, certain traits of clothing is shared between the characters. things such as weapons and jackets seem to be the main things that are shared between the different films of this genre. this is as they are ascoiated with survival, which is a main convention of post apocalyptic films.

The Road opening scene (analysis)

the road is a film that is set after an apocalyptic event that follows a father and his son trying to survive the barron deserted america. ive chose this film opening as it is shares the same conventions as i want to add into my final film opening.

The opening

1) Establishing shot of barron, hill.
2) Mid long shot, cuts to long shot of the same location.
3) Panning up long shot.
4) low angled shot of both the characters feet.
5) wide angled shot with both characters in view.
6) Extreme long shot with characters in the distance.cuts to long shot of the same location.
7) Re-establishing shot of lake to show desruction. (this happens alot in this opening scene)
8) Close up of characters hands.
9) Medium shot, with tree falling down in background.
10) Re-establishing shot of supermarket.
11) Medium long shot.

28) medium close up of smaller characters concerend face.
29) wide angle shot of a room.
30) close up of main protagonists face, cuts to black.

Questions

1) charactyer establishment is easily achieved in films of this genre as there is usually only 1 or two surivors. this ment that it was easily to understand that it the main characters are father and son, travelling through barron-apocalyptic lanscapes.

2) the location is established through the use of many establishing shots throughout the location. these longs shot show the small outline of the characters in this otherwise massive location which could symbolise how lonley and vulnerable the two characters are.

3) the narrative is constructed through the styoryline, his wife did not survive the apocalypse and therefore only father and son are surviving now.

4) the barron landscapes, destruction and sense of lonliness all reflect on the genre of this film, this is expected as it is set after an apocalypse has occurred.

5) the opening is very appropriate for a film of this genre as it ticks all the boxes of what a post apocalyptic film 'should' have and makes you as an audience feel lonley for the characters.

6) title are used very lightly in this opening. apart from the main title 'the road' there are no more titles used. this called also be to create the feeling of lonliness so the audience can fully connect with the characters from the start.

7) in my opinon this opening is very effective. the locations used are very beliveable and it helps you understand what a struggle it would be to survive after an apocalypse.

Analysing film openings (Zombieland)

The opening

Purpose

The purpose of this opening scene is to show the audience that a zombie apocalypse has hit Earth and there were few survivors when it happened. A screen shot from the opening shows this.
This opening also shows us the narrators/main protagonists rules that he has created in order for him to stay alive in the zombie apocalypse.

Conventions
Things that are typical of this genre include:
Zombies(of course)
Chaos, death and desruction, this all is shown in the opening to show you what type of genre this film is.

CAM SAM

Shots
Numerous shots are used in this opening scene including; close ups
This shot is very good as it shows the fear in the victims face and is used a lot to its advantage in this opening sequence,

Wide shots
This shot is good as it shows all different things going on in one shot, and is very good to use in chaotic scenes such as this one, which is the outbreak happening in the city.

Over the head shots,
This is good for intimidating shots or establishing shots, and in some cases when someone is sat on the toilet waiting to be eaten by a zombie.

Upwards facing shot,
Good for shots such as this one, when someone is being thrown off of a building.

Movement
In the start of the opening film the camera is supposed to a hand held camera and therefore moves around a lot and is quite shaky. Throughout the opening sequence the camera moves around a lot and flashes in between different shots quickly, this helps the mood of chaos come across as it does not let you focus on one aspect of the scene too much, so you also don't connected with the actors in this scene as none of them are main protagonists.

MES
Setting-America.

Lighting-more dark shots than light shots as apocalypses are generally not very happy, dark lighting helps to create this mood. Although in daytime shots lighting is lighter, understandably.

Characters- no main characters are revealed in this opening sequence, only lots of extras and zombies.

EDITING

Titles-the titles on this scene are very good! This is due to the fact they are integrated in the scenes to make it look like the titles are there in real life. For example:

In all the scenes something happens to the title which reflects what has happened in the scene, such as this title...
As the zombie was shot, blood was splattered onto the title giving it this very effective sense of realism that the title was intact there.
Another example of this includes the final title.

In the first instance the title is intact and displays the words 'zombieland' to show what the film is called.

But as the actor smashes the glass with the crowbar, the zombieland titles smashes aswell which give a very professional look and also fits with the conventions of this genre.
As you can see, it looks very professional.

Pace- whilst the titles are being displayed all the shots are in slow motion, this is perhaps so you can reflect on what's going on in the scene and also to show the titles, and how good the editing is.

Transitions-in the title sequence all the shots are dissolved into one another so that the sequence keeps flowing.

SOUND

Diegetic- this is not used a lot in the opening scene, the only times they are used are probably in the city scene(above). And this is on,y the collisions and the screaming that is diegetic.

Non-diegetic- most of the sounds are non diegetic. This includes the music, the narrators voice, smashing of glass and flesh being eaten.

Sounds effects-this includes the zombies voices, gun sounds, car engines and blood noise etc.

NARRATIVE

Structure-equilibrium and then conflict/disruption. In this opening scene the problem does not sort itself out as it is an apocalypse and the opening scene tries to portray how everything got bad and did not get better.
