Films are put into different ages categories that reflects how explicit a film is or how mature the content is. these categories are put in place to ensure that no one under the classified age can see the film as it would be too explicit/unsightly for the ages.
In Britain the main organisation that does these classifications are the 'British Board of Film', the BBFc aims to ensure these things;
- protect the public, and especially children, from content which might raise harm risks
- empower the public, especially parents, to make informed viewing choices
- recognise and respect adult freedom of choice within the law
- respond to and reflect changing social attitudes towards media content through proactive public consultation and research
- provide a cost-effective, efficient classification service within our statutory remit
- work in partnership with the industry to develop innovative service models to provide content advice which support emerging media delivery systems
- provide an effective service to enforcement agencies
Age ratings
U-This rating mean anyone of any age van view the film. it is used for film genres such as children's animation, to films such as Disney productions
PG-this means 'parental guidance' and means children can watch the film as long as they are accompanied by an adult.
12A- ages above 12 can see this film but anyone below the age of twelve must be with an adult.
12- you must be twelve to see this film.
15- you must be fifteen to view this production, for things such as action movies with violence, most post apocalyptic films I have researched come up in this age rating.
18- no one under the age of eighteen can view. things like horrors and war films with high amount of swearing, sexual content and gore come into this category.
Post apocalyptic films
Book of Eli- 15
The Road- 15
Children of men-15
12 monkeys-15
World War Z-15
Walking Dead-15
As you can see, the majority of the post apocalyptic films are categorised in the 15 age group. this is mainly as they all include some sort of volence and in some cases gore.
